So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart.
What strikes me as a modern American Christian is the radical phrase “daily with one accord.” Immediately the carnal side of my mind questions “Wait, weren’t they busy? Why didn’t they just have their family meals and went to church on Sunday and kept it at that?” Then my redeemed side responds:
“Well they were technically all a family in Christ, so it made perfect sense that they would fellowship and eat meals together daily.”
“Okay… then why did they still go to church daily?”
Well not only were they family, but they all had one heart and one way according to Jeremiah 32:39. They were led by the Spirit to be one with each other as much as possible with simplicity, a love, a gladness abiding in their hearts. The Spirit led them to fulfill a prayer form the Son to the Father in John 17:21 “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You.” If all three Persons of the Trinity lived on this earth like men, do you think one of Them would be so busy with their jobs, or their yards that they wouldn’t have fellowship with one another at least once a day? In theory, since they have eternal fellowship with each other, shouldn’t we always be in fellowship with one another? So it makes sense that we should at least be like the early church and be with each other as joyful children of the living God as much as possible.
Application: With being at the ranch happily with my fellow siblings in Christ, I don’t have to work hard at applying this verse to my life right now. But when I get back home, I’m going to find a way to gather and eat with fellow believers in my neighborhood. It would be a good idea to learn how to cook and be hospitable so that they might feel welcome in my home.
